Although touted as a book on WW1 for younger children, I think that the pattern of the rhythm and rhyme alongside the intertextual references made within Impey's illustrations mean that this is a book for older children too. Told from the point of view of a narrator who watches two boys grow up into old age having survived the war means that we are more emotionally tied to the events that we could be with many non-fiction texts.
