‘Small in the City’ follows a child as they step off a tram and embark on a journey across the city. Along the way, the character faces many challenges as the potential dangers of the city unfold. The reader is kept in suspense about the reason for this journey until it is revealed that the character is in fact looking for a lost pet. The child is nameless, ageless, and genderless which allows the reader to easily project themselves into the story, and children and adults alike will be drawn in by Smith’s illustrations, as readers relate to the feelings of being lost, alone, and overwhelmed.
